How do you Safely Blackout your headlights/taillights on a Mazda CX-5?

- Prep: Wash taillights, cut tint to size (slightly larger).
- Apply: Lightly mist taillight with water, peel back tint liner, squeegee (or credit card) bubbles out.
- Pro Tip: Use a heat gun (low setting) for a perfect fit around curves.
- Trim: Once applied, use a sharp blade to trim excess tint.
- Repeat: Apply tint to other taillight.
- Cure: Let it dry for 24 hours before washing.

If you’re looking to do a Chrome Delete on your Mazda CX-5 then you’ll want to start here. To remove the chrome under the windows I recommend the Gloss Black Vinyl Wrap from Vvivid, then hitting your wheels with Hyper Dip Wheel Paint in either Shadow Black or Piano Black.
You may be tempted to try and stretch the wheel kit to do other parts of your car but don’t. You must use all 5 cans on the wheels to do as many wet coats as possible to give yourself the best results. Pickup the separate emblem kit with 2 cans and you can blackout the front and back decals.
To make your CX-5 a “Shadow Edition” you’ll also want to black out your taillights with the Dark Black Air-Tint from Vvivid. It’s easy to apply and very forgiving due to the quality of the product. If you get a wrinkle or crease just hit it with a little heat from a heat-gun (the one I use is listed below). Don’t worry, these are made for tail/headlights so a difference in light passing through isn’t noticeable, especially at night. If you’re still on the fence, then go ahead and pick up the much lighter Vvivid tint in Smoke Black. If wrapping isn’t your thing, you can always use Lens Tint spray from Rust-Oleum. It works just as well and you determine how dark you want them with the number of coats you spray.
I decided to add an extra touch of black with the door handle covers. I think the subtle touch of the black door handles makes any Mazda CX5 with a chrome delete, extra eye-catching and sporty.
*The best thing about all of these products, is that while durable when properly applied, they can all be easily removed without damaging your vehicle, if you don’t like the finished look.

This stuff is great and really easy to use! I would check out a video or two on youtube just to familiarize yourself with how to spray and how much to spray because too much can cause it to run, but you’ll catch on once you see how it sprays from the can.
You can use this to black out any exterior decals or trim pieces on your Mazda CX 5. If you don’t like it, you can peel it off.

Black Roof Rails for the Mazda CX-5
These are for the CX 5 owners that don’t have rails from the factory but want them blacked out.
If your Mazda CX-5 already has roof rails you could either use the hyperdip, mentioned above, to black them out or use vinyl to wrap them.
For durability sake, if you actually use the rails to carry things on your vehicle, I would wrap them in vinyl. If you don’t use the rails and just like the look of them, either method will work just fine.

While a chrome delete will give your Mazda CX 5 a noticeably different appearance on the outside, a change in lighting can give your vehicle an added premium touch.
Headlight & Taillight Upgrades
Taking inspiration from @thedadcar on Instagram, I added a strip of CARLITS Leds to my CX 5 headlights. The wiring wasn’t difficult but it also wasn’t very straightforward. Once I figured out which wire went where, connecting them was simple since the Mazda CX5’s current blinkers are built with aftermarket upgrades in mind. Using the multimeter below I had to see which of the current DRL bulb wires was for the drl and which was for the blinker. After determining this, the wires are slid into the same housing as the current bulbs so there is no need to solder wires. I added a second pair of EverBright DRL Led Strips to the back that switch from red to amber(when turning).
I swapped out my CX5’s stock daytime amber running lights with a pair of switch-back bulbs from Lasfit. These are the only LED switch-back bulbs that I’ve found that do not cause hyperflash. They have built-in resistors which prevent hyperflash on your Mazda CX-5. These are a MUST for 2017 – 2021 models!
They are white instead of amber as normal daytime running lights, but have the ability to switch to amber when using it as a turn-signal. Lastly I switched my taillight bulb with an LED bulb from iBrightstar. These help since I blacked out my taillights.

These were a god-send! They are the only bulbs I’ve been able to use that prevent hyperflash without needing to add resistors, because these bulbs already have them built it. Genius!

CX 5 Interior Lighting Upgrades
Depending on the model and year of your Mazda CX-5, the interior lights may already be LEDs. If they are, then you won’t need to upgrade them. If they aren’t already LEDs then I highly recommend the interior LED kit from BMT listed below. You’ve tackled the exterior of your Mazda CX5, now it’s time to touch up the inside. The factory styling is already very nice, but below are a few items I picked up to add a special touch to my CX 5.
As an added bonus, not only does each item add more style to your all-ready stylish Mazda, they all offer surface protection. The wide mirror takes your brain a little while to get used to, but once you do, you’ll enjoy the added viewable area.
If you’re looking for the best seat cushions for the Mazda CX-5 then the set from Sunny below are totally worth it. Aside from being comfortable they offer an added sporty look to the interior and are ventilated, allowing the heated and cooling seats to do their thing. (Major plus!) Pickup the matching Back seat covers for complete seat protection.
I can’t speak highly enough of the Gear Shift Panel cover below in black titanium. I’ve seen and unfortunately purchased other covers that “looked” like this one, but they ended up being of a cheap plastic-like material. The one from NewYall, below, is actually titantium and very durable.
The center console cover from Auprite looks exactly ike the stock cover in the Mazda CX-5(2017-2021). That was exactly why I got it. Having suffered a huge gash-like scratch in my last vehicle’s center console I wanted to protect it immediately, without covering the minimal look.
The carbon fiber mirror covers from Kadore are great for a bit of protection and a sportier look for the CX-5. I got the stainless steel scuff plates for the only bit of bling on my CX5. They are sutble but eye-catching when opening the door, especially when recently cleaned.
Note, I only have the carbon fiber engine start/stop button cover because I haven’t found it in a “brushed titantium” finish. I know that button can be prone to wear after a while so this one is better than nothing.

Performance 💪
Having a v6 on my other vehicle and knowing that the Mazda CX5 is only a 4-cylinder, I thought I would be let down, but no. The CX5 Skyactiv engine system delivers a surprising amount of power for it’s size! Thus I opted away from serious performance items, for now, and stuck with the K&N filter and Sport Exhaust Muffler tip.
I’m aware that there are tons of people out there who are totally against oil-lubricated air filters, but I’ve been using K&N for years on many other vehicles and they’ve always performed well. The key is not using too much oil on them after cleaning. The air filter below from K&N has been working great in my CX-5. If you pick this one up, don’t forget the cleaning kit.
I didn’t want my CX5 sounding obnoxiously loud, because at the end of the day, it’s a Mazda CX-5 –but I wanted a more aggressive sound. I’ve been more than happy with the tip below from DC Sports.

None of the below are absolutely necessary if you already have something similar, but I found them all 110% helpful when performing the upgrades to my CX5.
If you’re doing a vinyl chrome delete then the Knifeless tape, Heat gun and Fiskar cutter came in handy. The Trim tools came in handy when I was installing my GoVee interior lights as well as the interior LED bulbs. One of the tools is meant speficially for prying off the plastic light bulb housing without damaging it. The multimeter was very helpful when determing which wires I needed to connect when installing my LED Daytime-running light strips on my CX-5.
